It seems as though the controversial relationship between linebacker Aldon Smith and the San Francisco 49ers has finally come to an end.
Following his third DUI arrest Friday morning, ESPN’s Jim Trotter is reporting that the 49ers have released Smith from the team. Smith was arrested on charges of not only DUI, but hit-and-run, and vandalism early Friday morning in Santa Clara.
ESPN reporter Adam Schefter shared this statement from the 49ers on his Facebook page:
“This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues. Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue.”
Smith was a Pro Bowler and NFC Defensive Player of the Year back in 2012, but he has been plagued by his issues off the field during his career, including a nine-game suspension in 2014.
If another team takes a flyer on Smith for his talent, it will have to come after whatever suspension is levied down on him by Roger Goodell. Although with Ray Rice still currently a free agent, it’s entirely possible that Smith will not play another down in the NFL.
