In a truly heartbreaking story, nine-year-old Kaiser Carlile, who spent his summer training with the bat boy and bat girl program for the Liberal Bee Jays, a Kansas amateur baseball team, died a day after being struck in the head by a practice swing. The accident happened on Saturday during a National Baseball Congress game when Carlile was fetching a bat and got in the path of a batter getting ready to head to the plate. The umpire performed CPR on Carlile on the field and he was taken to the hospital, where he died on Sunday. The NBC also suspended their bat boy-bat girl program for children under 18.
According to KSN, Carlile was a Bee Jays “superfan” and was living his dream by serving as their bat boy. A witness to the incident said that Carlile, who was wearing a helmet, fell down after being struck and got up before falling down again. EMTs were on the scene for another person in the crowd, so they were able to get to Carlile quickly.
The NBC released a statement to express their sympathy:
The National Baseball Congress has experienced tragedy many times in 84 years, however, it’s difficult to remember a day that is darker than this one. On Sunday, we lost a member of our family and it will hurt for a very long time. With heavy hearts, we send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Carlile family and Bee Jays organization. Sometimes life doesn’t make sense and this accident certainly is a memorable example. Kaiser was simply doing something he loved. He was simply doing a job most kids across America dream of having for one night or multiple summers. …
The Liberal Bee Jays also started a GoFundMe page for Carlile’s family; it was set up before Kaiser died, but it’s still up to raise money to support the Carliles.
