If the Chicago Cubs win this World Series and end their 108-year run of goat-induced curses and Bartman-bred bad luck, we’re going to see the sports celebration to end all sports celebrations. It might be several nights of harmless drunken revelry, or perhaps something more destructive and costly, but it will be a long overdue celebration nonetheless, and it will be led by some of the biggest, most loyal celebrity sports fans, including Eddie Vedder, John Cusack, and, of course, Bill Murray.
In fact, it’s only fitting that Friday’s Game 3, the first World Series game to be hosted at Wrigley Field in 71 years, featured Murray leading fans in one of the greatest sports traditions of them all: Signing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Murray interrupted the Cubs’ tense 1-0 deficit to the Cleveland Indians to deliver a performance like only he can, and the only thing that would have made it better would have been shots of Vedder’s whole family singing along in their own section.
Oh well, we take what we can get when it comes to the mysterious and lovable Murray. Will that include grand marshal duties for what will undoubtedly be the world’s most massive parade if (and probably when) the Cubs win the whole damn thing? Who knows, but we can bet he’ll at least be around to serve a few drinks.
