Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson is doing everything he can to get nine-year-old Maddie Wright a dog. The young Columbus fan used a sign to ask Atkinson to score a goal on Monday night so she could receive a pup for her birthday. Atkinson proceeded to score three. Now that the family has agreed to get the dog, Atkinson is paying for it.
After hounding her father to let them get a second dog, Maddie was given the opportunity to pick any player to score during Monday’s Jackets-Canadiens game. If the player did, they’d adopt. Maddie chose wisely (though the hat trick is still only leading to just one dog) and the family has apparently already picked out a rescue dog from a local shelter. Atkinson has generously offered to hook them up.
Once Atkinson got wind of it this morning in Montreal, he was all about it. Atkinson is paying for the adoption and will help the Wrights with whatever they need to get set up with their new family member.
This is the second time already this week that young hockey fans have won a dog bet, as Bobby Ryan previously helped convince a family to get a puppy after scoring on Monday night.
If this trend continues, sooner or later one of these kids is going to choose incorrectly and hate that player forever.
