Atletico Nacional is petitioning CONMEBOL to award Chapecoense the South American championship, but that’s not the only show of support after the tragedy. Brazilian first-division club Corinthians wants to make sure Chapecoense is free from facing relegation over the next three seasons and to give teams the ability to loan the club players at no cost to the team next season.
The crash reportedly occurred due to a electrical system failure. Initial rescue efforts were hindered by poor weather and visibility but six survivors were pulled from the wreckage. The investigation continues into the definitive cause of the crash, which occurred en route from Bolivia to Medellin International Airport.
