Chip Kelly was fired as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday evening, a move many predicted for some time (though the question of whether Kelly the GM fired Kelly the coach is unknown at this time). Still, it’s a major move considering the organization gave Kelly full control of personnel decisions but a year ago. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Kelly’s moves were largely considered failures.
Where Kelly, who was 26-21 in just under three full seasons, goes from here remains to be seen. The college ranks are full (for now), and now that Kelly has tasted complete control, it’s entirely possible he doesn’t want to give up on the pros just yet (looking at you, Tennessee). After all, he did win 10 games in each of his first two seasons. In any case, the internet did what it always does when major sports news breaks: it reacted in the best, most lighthearted way possible.
First, there was shock:

Then, there was reflection:
Surreal ride for Chip Kelly from Columbia to New Hampshire to Johns Hopkins, back to New Hampshire to Oregon to the Eagles … to this.

And, then, there were jokes. Lots and lots of jokes:

(News of Kelly’s release came in the first half of the Russell Athletic Bowl.)
