At a baseball game, nothing seems to excite people more than getting a souvenir. No, not the $30 fitted hat your son demands because he says the adjustable ones look dumb (they do), the free kind — baseballs put into the stands, either by hand (on purpose) or by bat (accidentally). So on the one hand, I can understand that this fan saw his opportunity and went for it, looking cool be damned.

On the other hand, chill out, man. Consider the context. The Cleveland Indians played the Kansas City Royals yesterday, in the afternoon on a weekday. The crowd was understandably sparse. There was exactly one other fan in reach of the foul ball, and he didn’t seem all that interested in it. So maybe slow down and don’t try to leap three rows of seats, tossing your $9 beer and dropping your cell phone in the process. With that sort of turnout, there were going to be other opportunities to get a foul ball.
If you watch the video to the end, you’ll be reassured that the man found his phone and it seemed to be okay. And to be completely honest, I don’t know if I’d be able to restrain myself if I saw that sweet, sweet baseball so tantalizingly close. But I’d like to think that I’d keep my beer in doing so.
