The news has been out for a while that longtime College GameDay host Chris Fowler, citing a desire to do more play-by-play, would no longer host the program. Fowler will act as the announcer for ABC’s top primetime game on Saturdays, the College Football Playoff, and various major tennis tournaments, while Rece Davis will replace him on GameDay.
Today is the first episode of GameDay without Fowler since 1995, and the Worldwide Leader decided to pay homage to the show’s former host with a video tribute that was voiced by Tom Rinaldi. The video honored Fowler’s brilliance as a host, whether it be the on-air personality who routinely was a staple in everyone’s living rooms from 10 a.m. up until the show went off the air at noon every Saturday, or as the guy who was praised behind-the-scenes for his superb preparation.
Sure, everyone expects Davis to do a great job – he’s been doing college football stuff for ESPN for years, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks Davis isn’t excellent at his job – but there’s no replacing one of the best hosts in the history of ESPN.
If you watched GameDay this morning and missed your weekly dose of Chris Fowler, don’t worry, he’s calling tonight’s game between Wisconsin and Alabama, along with Monday’s matchup between Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
