Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, and there’s been a hell of a lot of smoke coming out of a potential Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather superfight. Sure, the UFC has Conor McGregor locked into one of their notoriously restrictive contracts and aren’t known for outside the box matchmaking like this. But Conor McGregor has already proven he’s willing to stand up to the promotion, even when it cost him the headlining bout of UFC 200.

Though the fight may never materialize, McGregor certainly seems to be moving forward as if it could. After Floyd Mayweather said the fight was a possibility, McGregor uploaded a poster for the unofficial fight to his social-media accounts. And now we’re learning he’s even lining up trainers for the bout.

In an interview with Radio Rahim from BoxingScene.com, famed boxing coach Freddie Roach admitted Conor’s people had reached out and asked if he’d train the Irishman. Roach has worked with many of the best combat sports athletes in the world, including Manny Pacquiao and Georges St-Pierre.

“They did ask me if I’ll train him,” Roach said. ” I said ‘sure, bring him down.’ I’d like to see [him], meet the guy and see what he has. He seems like a nice guy.”

When asked if he thought McGregor had the skills to compete with Mayweather in what many imagine will be a boxing match rather than mixed martial arts, Roach refused to speculate.

“No, I don’t even know what level he’s at right now. I couldn’t say that without working with him. He seems like a good kickboxer. That’s all I’ve seen of him. But as a boxer, I’ve never seen him box.”

Just another day where the McGregor vs Mayweather fight everyone says isn’t going to happen continues to march forward like it is.
