I’ve been lucky enough to sit cageside as both an MMA photographer and as a reporter for years. When you get that close to the action, two things really jump out at you: the view sucks and it’s best to just look at a nearby monitor or at the Jumbotron, and the noises these guys make display how brutal the sport of MMA truly is.
The only thing louder than the fists, shins, elbows and feet blasting against the torsos and domes of the combatants are the groans they make as they work for position or consider the technique they were just caught with to end the match. There’s truly nothing like hearing the dull smack of a fist against flesh.
This highlight, which will now forever be remembered as one of the nastiest in all of history, is unlike any other. What we have here is Michael Page catching Cyborg Santos with a counter flying knee which caved in Santos’ skull, and will possibly end his career. Listen to the crack. If there’s a more haunting noise, knowing that the perfectly-timed knee was embedded deep into his forehead, let me know. It’s a reminder that these men and women put it all on the line every time they step into the cage.
