Before Tom Brady led two fourth quarter touchdown drives followed by the most questionable play call in Super Bowl history, there was Doug Baldwin’s touchdown catch late in the third. There was reason for excitement on the Seahawks’ side, as the score gave them a 10-point lead with the title in sight.
To celebrate, Baldwin did this, which the NBC cameras chose not to air after catching it on delay:
It’s perhaps the most famous ass-related touchdown celebration this side of Randy Moss, and it’s one that earned Baldwin a 15-yard penalty. After the game, Baldwin refused to explain himself. But on Monday, he finally did:
“I do regret the fact that it cost my team 15 yards, and to the fans, ultimately I apologize to anybody I offended in any way.
“I spent a lot of time those two weeks prior to getting ready for that game just focused on my individual matchup with [Patriots CB Darrelle Revis], and I put a lot into it, and in that moment, I guess you could say it was just kind of a built-up frustration I was letting out in that sequence, you know, between him and I. Obviously there was competitive stuff going on in that game, and in that moment, I just let out what I felt personally.”
So, we know it was directed at Revis, who had completely shut Baldwin down to that point — the TD was his first catch of the game — but questions linger. Like, what does taking a crap have to do with Darrelle Revis? Was he miming pooping on him? Or maybe he ate Revis up and crapped him out? We may never know the answers to these important questions.
