Legendary Safety Ed Reed Signs One-Day Contract With Ravens And Announces His Retirement

Legendary safety Ed Reed officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday afternoon. The longtime Baltimore Ravens safety did this after signing a one-day deal with the team that drafted him, allowing him to retire as a Raven.

Baltimore selected Reed with the No. 24 pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. The former Miami (FL) star quickly established himself as one of the top safeties in the league, as he was named a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro during his second year in the NFL. Reed ended up getting selected to nine Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro teams, is Baltimore’s all-time leader in interceptions with 61, and was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. He was also a member of Baltimore’s Super Bowl-winning team in 2012.

In 2013, Reed left the Ravens and joined the Houston Texans. Despite signing a three-year deal, injuries led to Reed losing his starting spot and eventually getting released. He was signed by the New York Jets — whose head coach was former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan — and performed well during his time in New York. Reed was out of football for all of the 2014 season and announced his retirement earlier this week.

Reed will officially be inducted into the Ravens’ Ring of Honor in November, and it would be a major surprise if he isn’t a first-ballot Hall of Famer the first year he’s eligible.
