Talk of a Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match have been swirling for months now, and that’s not too surprising considering one of the main guys spreading rumors about the fight was Floyd Mayweather himself. Who knows what has been going on behind the scenes, but in public Mayweather has gone from pushing the match as a possibility to saying McGregor was the only fighter he was willing to come back for.
Something must have happened recently, though, because now Floyd is singing a different tune.
“I tried to make the fight happen between me and Conor McGregor,” Mayweather said in a video from FightHype released on Saturday. “We weren’t able to make the fight happen, so we must move on.”
Perhaps the UFC finally put their foot down and convinced both Mayweather and McGregor that they’d never allow the fight to happen. Lawyers may have been involved, and terms like ‘tortious interference’ may have been thrown around. Or if you want to keep the dream of this massive freakshow fight alive, perhaps this is just a negotiating tactic from Floyd showing he’s more than willing to walk away from the fight if he doesn’t like the terms.
It’s hard to speculate because all we really know is both fighters have enjoyed talking up the megafight and all the publicity it has generated. Whether either man was ever serious about going through with it isn’t clear. But until something a bit more concrete is put forward, we’re thinking Floyd is right … it’s time to move on.
