The NHL season is still extremely young, but so are many of the stars behind the first week highlights.
Jack Eichel is among a handful of very talented rookies expected to lead a very interesting race for the Calder Trophy this season, and last summer’s No. 2 overall pick is already showing flashes of brilliance in his first few games with the Buffalo Sabres.
After scoring the lone goal in Buffalo’s season opener, Eichel tallied the second goal of his career on Monday against the Blue Jackets and, boy, it was a beauty. The 18-year-old showcased speed, strength and a phenomenal shot as he beat a defender to the puck, stick-handled his way to space and fired a laser through a very small opening at a tough angle.
The Sabres tanked hard last season for a shot at a top pick in the summer’s draft and – even though they were considered runner-ups in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes – they’ve got to be ecstatic with what they’ve seen from Eichel thus far.
