“It’s like something out of a movie” is a cliche that usually carries very little water, but the story of John Scott’s journey to the 2016 NHL All-Star Game is truly the stuff of Hollywood.
After a career as an enforcer, Scott became the centerpiece of an online voting campaign for the game. He tried to stem the tide of the movement, but was voted captain of the Pacific Division anyway. That wasn’t the end of it, as the Arizona Coyotes traded him to the Montreal Canadiens, who demoted him to an AHL team in Newfoundland in a thinly-veiled attempt to keep him from playing in the All-Star Game.
In a piece for The Player’s Tribune, Scott wrote that the league pressured him to withdraw from the game, but when they attempted to use his kids to shame him into pulling out (very likely done by Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell), he decided he was going to the All-Star Game no matter what.
With his nine-months-pregnant wife Danielle in attendance, Scott scored two goals and earned MVP honors as his Pacific team won the tournament.
According to TSN, that storybook tale could be made into a movie. Scott’s agent, Ben Hankinson, told TSN that his client will carefully consider his options.
“The John Scott ride has been nothing short of a rollercoaster to an incredible ending,” Hankinson said. “We do have a lot of different options for him to pursue, but he’s not looking to do everything there is. He’s going to have some different routes that he can take as far as books and even a potential movie. He can take it as far as he wants to.”
If this was the plot to the movie Goon, you’d say it was too ridiculous to be true. Now we can start casting the movie with real Hollywood actors because this seems like a no-brainer. So…
John Scott — Brad Garrett (both are 6-foot-8, so we are type-casting)
Gary Bettman — Ryan Gosling (look, we need a big-time actor and this would be funny)
Colin Campbell — Eddie Marsan (he looks a little like him and is just a good actor)
Danielle Scott — Rachel McAdams (Gosling/McAdams is magic on screen)
Danielle is scheduled to deliver her twins Thursday, and they should have professional representation no later than Friday.
