We’re not even to the All-Star Break yet, but this baseball season has definitely not been kind to the nether regions of several players. Juan Uribe became the latest player to suffer a brutal groin injury this weekend when he took a screaming one-hopper straight to the balls during Sunday’s game in Anaheim.
The Cleveland Indians third baseman attempted to play a hot shot off the bat of Mike Trout during the fourth inning, but he misjudged the bounce, and the ball came up and struck him in the marbles. It’s unknown if Uribe was wearing a cup, but even if he was, the impact still left him in a great deal of pain. It’s not hard to imagine why.
For the first time, Statcast has produced information I find interesting. The ball that struck Uribe's privates was traveling at 106 mph.

Uribe had to be carted off the field and taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a “testicular contusion.” He’s the second Indians player in less than a week to be the unfortunate host of that ailment, as Yan Gomes left a game last Tuesday after being struck in the nuts with a foul ball. A little more than a week prior, Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph had to be placed on the disabled list after taking a foul ball to the jewels.
It’s a bad year to be the reproductive organs of a baseball player, and the scariest part of it all may be that we’re not even to the midway point in the season. I don’t think this is what guys had in mind when they campaigned to “Make Baseball Fun Again.”
