Promoting a movie is hard. The appearances, the interviews, the traveling all over the globe to discuss the film with journalists, fans and talk-show hosts can get mundane.
So, if you’re Kevin Hart and you’re promoting Ride Along 2 and you find a goalkeeper in the English Premier League with the same last name, why not go to that team’s practice and take some penalty kicks against him? Is it really any less creative than doing the 8,000th lip sync or karaoke thing with Jimmy Fallon?
It was Kevin Hart vs. Manchester FC’s Joe Hart for three penalty kicks in front of teammates, Ride Along co-star Ice Cube and a handful of cameras to chronicle the cross-brand promotional event. How does actor/comedian Hart fare against goalkeeper Hart? If you haven’t clicked to see how this short video unfolds by now, you are missing out on the greatest thing you’ll see today assuming you just woke up and your day will end after you see it.
The shame here is this bit seems entirely driven by two men having similar last names. That gets Ice Cube off the hook for any idea based off this unless Ride Along 3 promotion features Ice Cube vs. a Rubik’s Cube or Ice Cube vs. the Christian Slater movie Gleaming the Cube.
The Hart/Hart rivalry actually goes back to 2014. It was a more innocent time, a time with lower production values.
