The Homer Simpson “disappear into the bushes” meme is based on a 1994 episode of The Simpsons titled “Homer Loves Flanders,” in which Homer asks Ned if he wants to hang out, Ned declines, and Homer says, “Oh, okay,” before slowly backing away into the bushes. The clip has since been used during sporting events portraying embarrassed fair weather fans who switch allegiances mid-game when their original team is getting beat.
During the third period of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s eventual 5-3 win over over the Bruins on Sunday, Lightning Vision, Tampa Bay’s scoreboard production team, saw it as a golden opportunity to put the meme to good use by portraying Homer backing into the bushes wearing a Bruins shirt and exiting with a Lightning shirt.
