Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor wrapped up their week-long press tour over the weekend, where the two traded verbal jabs and less than flattering — sometimes downright offensive — comments about each other. The press tour brought hype for the fight to a fever pitch, but there is still over a month left until the August 26 bout in Las Vegas.
McGregor’s ability to talk and his legion of loyal Irish fans were galvanized by his press tour showing, and that’s shown up in the sportsbooks. McGregor has slowly closed the gap on Mayweather in odds to win the bout, and in the latest batch of odds and props from offshore book Bovada, he’s brought Floyd’s odds to win down to a new low at -500.
The public has been on McGregor from the beginning, with William Hill in Las Vegas announcing earlier in the month that if Conor wins it will be the biggest loss the book has ever faced. At this point, those looking for value have to turn to the undefeated, 49-0 boxing champion as the best value between the two, and fade the public that is hammering McGregor.
Along with odds to win, Bovada has released a new batch of prop bets, such as how long the fight will last, PPV buys, knockout and knockdown props and more. Based off of the lines available, oddsmakers expect Mayweather to win by going the distance, as that has the shortest odds of all outcomes (5-2). For McGregor to win, they either expect an early knockout (9-1 to earn a knockout in the first three rounds) or win on points (10-1) with much higher odds on the fight ending in the later rounds.
For my money, the over on 9.5 rounds is the best value (+125), considering Mayweather’s proclivity for defensive fighting and out-pointing opponents to lopsided wins on the cards. Mayweather and McGregor have both predicted a knockout in this fight, but we’ve heard that boast from Mayweather on a few occasions in recent bouts and not seen him follow through on that promise. As for the PPV buy number, Bovada sets that at 4.99 million, which would shatter the record of 4.6 million set by Mayweather-Pacquiao — and is well within reach considering McGregor’s following. If forced to take action there, I’d lean over, but would advise steering clear.
