It’s tough to imagine what was going through the mind of the left field ball girl during the top of the seventh inning of the Pirates-Diamondbacks game. Surely, she must know that her area of focus should only be on ground balls that have already been ruled foul. Unfortunately, on a pop fly off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Wednesday night, she momentarily forgot her role and most-likely cost the Pirates an out.
With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Salty hit a pop fly towards left that was drifting foul. Starling Marte had a bead on it, but so did the ball girl, who also tried to make the catch. At the last second, Marte had to pull up in order to avoid a collision, and the ball hit the ground.
The poor girl. I’m sure she felt terrible afterwards. Thankfully for her, Saltalamacchia ended up grounding out moments later, so no harm, no foul (pun intended). But, as the announcers said afterwards, “she didn’t mean to, but that’s a no-no.”
