Roger Goodell is America’s most powerful laughingstock this side of Donald Trump. He’s out here doing ridiculous things, like hearing an appeal of his own decision to hilariously suspend golden boy Tom Brady, and deciding that yes, his original decision is still correct. He’s done all of this with the seriousness of an oncologist, or Leslie Nielsen in Airplane!, saying insane things with deathly seriousness.
But now we know that it was all a facade. We have proof that Goodell is a comic genius on the level of Andy Kaufman, executing a months-long troll job on Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots. We know this thanks to former NFL GM Ron Wolf, who was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday night as a contributor (neither a coach nor a player), and who congratulated Goodell on his long con:
Wolf says to Goodell, “Way to go on that Brady thing,” and Goodell has himself a belly laugh. He lets his guard down for one precious moment when one of his old buddies gives him a verbal wink, and suddenly the curtain has fallen. My God, the genius of it all.
