Ronda Rousey sat down with the New York Times for a friendly chit chat. She covers a variety of subjects, including the admission that she’s been taking acting lessons for years (which will come in handy for the Roadhouse remake). There’s plenty of real career stuff in there, too. Rousey says her own mom is disappointed with how she took “so long” — a mere 34 seconds — to knock out Bethe Correia because she wanted to draw the experience out.
Rousey then shifts the conversation to body image. She’s fed up with being told she’s too big for photo shoots and commercials. So much so that Rousey purposely gained a few pounds just to mess with stylists and photographers.
“Because somebody said something really rude to me, I came into the shoot purposely way heavier. The campaign ended up being amazing, even though I was heavier just to make a point. I swear to God if anyone calls me fat one more time in my life, I’m going to kill them.”
Rousey says her fighting shape at 5-foot-7 is 135 pounds, but she prefers weighting around 148 pounds.
“That’s like my favorite weight: You can’t have both,” she said.
The piece actually goes a little deeper than expected with Rousey admitting to a past bout with bulimia. She also speaks with fervor about how she wants to change social standards for women by refusing to weigh how much execs tell her to weigh. She’s certainly off to a good start.
