You do not want to mess with Roy Williams.
That was the lesson learned by CBS college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb this weekend when the longtime North Carolina coach ripped him a new one during a postgame presser. Following the Tar Heels win over Miami on Saturday, the 65-year-old coach addressed Gottlieb’s speculation that Williams would retire after this season.
There was no "report" on Roy. Simply stating his knees, vertigo,NCAA stuff make people think this could be his last year #UNC

and yes, people in basketball think Roy might walk if they win the whole thing….this is not news to anyone in hoops

Gottlieb’s speculation was just that — mere speculation, without any concrete reports or evidence to back up his theory — and the rumormongering clearly didn’t sit well with Williams. He made sure to bring it up during the presser, and he didn’t pull any punches, either.
Roy rips Doug Gottlieb for saying before the game that Roy was retiring and that Hurbert Davis was taking over. (Something I missed.)

Roy says "that's not journalism." Called it "sinful" twice to say that. Says Gottlieb couldn't put his shorts on right at Oklahoma State.

Roy to Gottlieb: "you have no freakin idea what you're talking about. The guy who said that couldn't put his damn pants on the right way …

At one point Roy starts mimicking the old fan chant toward Gottlieb: "shorts on backwards, shorts on backwards." Humorous.
— Andrew Carter (@_andrewcarter) February 20, 2016
And then after all that Roy says: "And Doug — I like Doug."
— Andrew Carter (@_andrewcarter) February 20, 2016
That was among the more entertaining Roy rants. He came back to give it. Presser was over and he remembered he wanted to say it.

It seems that Coach Williams has “no chill,” as the kids are saying these days. Williams definitely gets props for referencing Gottlieb’s infamous “shorts on backward” moment from his college playing days, and good for him because there’s no way he should ever get to live that down. Gottlieb seemed to enjoy the jab himself.

But just because Gottlieb has a sense of humor about Williams’ comments doesn’t mean that he’s backing down from the speculation.
The truth always makes people uncomfortable

If Williams does indeed decide to call it a career after this season, it’s probably a safe bet that Gottlieb won’t be handed the scoop.
