The World Series starts on Oct. 27, and promises to be a doozy no matter who makes it. One team that has absolutely no shot, however, is the Springfield Isotopes, the fictional baseball team from the universe of The Simpsons. Even though they managed to make it to Game 7 of the Nuclear League Championship, it appears they called Ralph Wiggum to the plate as a pinch hitter. Truly, they are doomed.
Since the World Series will be broadcast on FOX, it makes sense that the network would cut a promo using characters and animation from their flagship TV enterprise. We see all the familiar faces, but what I really want to know is, who’s this Isotopes player who hits a home run so hard it breaks out of the Earth’s gravitational pull? It’s unfortunate that the ball had to hit Kang and Kodos’ curiously-resistant-to-vacuum-properties spaceship, thus ensuring our annihilation, but seriously, that is some prodigious pop.
Props to the animators for the slogan “While Earth Exists,” which really should stick around for all the World Series promotions. It makes more sense than MLB’s “THIS” campaign, even devoid of the alien invasion context. One last shout-out goes to the animators for their burn on the Cardinals by making everyone in Church annoyed that they’re being told to root for them.
