On January 4, the sports world lost Stuart Scott, an icon in broadcasting for two decades with ESPN. He changed our view of sports highlights, often referencing things in pop culture and marrying them with catchphrases like “booyah” and “as cool as the other side of the pillow” as host of SportsCenter.
Despite being seriously ill in 2014, Scott showed up to the ESPYs to accept the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. He spoke about his battle with cancer.
“Every day, I’m reminded that our life’s journey is really about the people who touch us.”
“I’m not losing.”
“When you die, it doesn’t mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.”
Following his death, graffiti artists created a wonderful mural of Scott in downtown L.A., and on Monday night, just ahead of this year’s ESPY awards, Scott’s daughters Taelor and Sydni tweeted out this photo.
@ESPYs @ESPN We made it to LA. We're proud of our dad! Looking forward to be with our #ESPNfamily #StuartScottLegacy pic.twitter.com/rE2Bf73OMN
