Former “American Idol” contestant Lauren Alaina became the show’s latest singer to be shoe-horned into a NFL broadcast for the sake of synergy, as she sang the National Anthem before yesterday’s game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. And as we have come to expect from today’s pop singers, she screwed it up.
Granted, Alaina didn’t complete botch it like some of the other derps we’ve seen in recent history, but she did pause and hesitate for a few seconds before finally remembering the words to the song that we all learned in elementary school. And much like today’s stars, Alaina took to Twitter to clear it all up.
“I am not a robot. I have no excuses. I messed up. You know, what can ya do. At Least didn’t fall down again.”
“Thank you everyone for the kind words. But the truth is I messed up. I’m gonna spend the rest of the day being thankful for all my blessings.”
A lot of people treat these moments as simple mistakes – hey, people forget sh*t, right? And I don’t know why I get so uppity when singers screw up our National Anthem, other than them screwing up the theme song of our country. But these people are pop singers and stars because they wanted the attention and they craved the celebrity, so if they’re not capable of doing a few test runs to clear away the jitters then the network should find someone who can. I know we’re not always going to get Super Bowl Whitney Houston in her prime, but I’m just tired of getting singers who are more like Whitney Houston now.
P.S. – She’s not brave because she recovered and finished the song. That’s just stupid.
