Tom Brady may be the best quarterback in football history. His credentials are well-known, and on Sunday evening, we learned that he’s as bad of a wide receiver as he is outstanding of a quarterback.
The Patriots were facing a third down and decided that it was time to turn to the back of the playbook. They decided to run a reverse to Danny Amendola, which was risky, because the Eagles sniffed it out immediately.
What the Eagles did not anticipate was that Amendola was going to throw a pass to his 40-year-old quarterback. The issue here is that Brady is, well, a 40-year-old dude who is not a natural pass catcher, so you can anticipate how this went.
Brady has caught two passes in his career: Once during his rookie campaign in 2001, and once in 2015. Those are also the only two passes in his career that he’s seen thrown his way, according to Pro-Football-Reference, and he reeled both of them in for 59 yards and no scores.
This was also the first time in his playoff career that Brady has seen a ball thrown in his direction. As this play showed, maybe New England should keep this one in the back of the playbook while Brady’s still lining up under center.
