The other day, I filled out this survey for the UFC because someone told me I had a chance to win some free crap and I absolutely love winning free crap. I don’t know what the point of the survey was, but I think it had something to do with how much social media and networking accounts for the UFC influence my decisions to watch the shows, and all of my “scale of 1 to 5” answers were basically indicative of “No, it depends on how awesome the fights are”.
But one of the questions had to do with how much I’m willing to pay to watch a PPV if there’s a title fight and I thought, “Well, every PPV should have a title fight, because title fights are awesome, I don’t understand this question, why are you asking me this question!” However, to get to the rambling point, UFC 160 slightly altered that opinion, thanks to the awesomeness of the Junior dos Santos-Mark Hunt fight, which wasn’t a title fight but could have been the main event.
UFC 160 was a great PPV, one of the best in recent memory, so I’d like to help the UFC alter their survey questions a little bit by saying that if I’m going to pay $50 to watch a PPV, then I expect a title fight. But if I’m going to watch a free fight like UFC on FUEL TV 10, I’d really like to see a title fight or at least a fight to determine a No. 1 contender, as opposed to a “perennial contenders” heavyweight bout that makes me feel like I’m being served beef jerky two weeks after I ate the best filet mignon of the year.
That’s not to say that I don’t think UFC on FUEL TV 10 can be a great free fight event, but to follow a heavyweight title match with this main event just seems underwhelming. But we do have a rematch in the main event, as No. 8-ranked Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira takes on No. 3-ranked Fabricio Werdum. Minotauro won by unanimous decision the first time these two faced off at Pride Critical Countdown Absolute in 2006. They were also opposing coaches on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, so they have some good history.
