No level of football embodies the community aspect of sports quite like high school, and Foothill High in Palo Cedro, Cali. was the perfect example of that the day of their first game. As the Cougars took the field, each of the 57 players laid an orange rose at the feet of senior cheerleader Ashley Adamietz, who is battling Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.
Orange is the official color of leukemia awareness.
The laying of roses is a quiet yet personal tribute that was beautifully executed, and the effect it had on Ashley was obvious. In a Twitter post, she said she was “shocked, overwhelmed and overall speechless” at the display. The gesture was organized by Ryan Caetano, a senior on the team, and all of his teammates unsurprisingly were supportive of the idea, which reflects well on the team and the community.
Adamietz is going through daily chemotherapy to battle her illness, and to do so while appearing at football games is no small feat. It shows a determination and positivity that the Foothill community was only too happy to reflect back at her. Ashley’s friends have set up a crowdfunding platform to help with the family’s medical expenses, which you can visit and donate here.
