If there is one thing that network television has really been lacking in, it would have to be demonic comedies. There’s a good reason why scripted television has mostly been associated with cable of late, probably the endless police procedurals that like to dance around into different genres in hopes of snagging up viewers and advertisers. Fox has been known to take some risks with their programming, including big-budget, sci-fi shows that tend to fail in just about every way, but comedy seems rather timeless, right?
So it should come as no surprise that Fox is looking to scoop up a new comedy, but this time, with a demonic twist, says Variety. The show, called Amy Damnation, will focus on a friendly girl named Amy who finds herself sick of being a doormat to everyone, only to discover that she was such a hellion as a child that her parents had a demon exhumed from her person via an exorcism. That means that she has to hunt down this demon that possessed her because, logically, that’s the only way for her to take back her life.
If the idea sounds kind of out there, it is, but the show is being helmed by a credible team with a strong background, with Alison Silverman, who works as a producer on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and won two prime-time Emmys for her writing on Colbert Report on as a writer and producer, as well as Krisel and Danica Radovanov, who have worked on shows like Portlandia and FX’s Baskets.
It looks like Supernatural will have some competition in the demonic department on broadcast television in the near future, hopefully. The idea of a show blending together the wit of a show like Kimmy Schmidt with supernatural elements from The Exorcist is definitely a different idea. Fox has ordered a pilot episode, but nothing else is known just yet.
