Hollywood isn’t a town that takes kindly to supposed “imperfections.” Everyone is gorgeous, everyone has flawless skin, everyone is better (richer) than you or me. And if you’re not, you’re a character actor. It’s particularly difficult for young women, who are held to impossible beauty standards.
Ariel Winter’s Alex Dunphy-inspired response? God, that’s stupid.
The Modern Family star went from a size 32-F to 34-D after breast reduction surgery last June, a decision she’s “extremely happy” she made. “It’s important to talk about it,” Winter said, “because there are young girls suffering like I did, but there shouldn’t be a stigma about it.” To prove her point, she wore a strapless dress that showed her scars at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and now she’s best friends with Seal and Tina Fey.
After the event, Winter tweeted:
Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all. :) (Via)
She later added on Twitter, “Humbled by all the positive feedback about my scars. Embrace who you are, love every bit about you, because that is what makes you… well… you.” That’s sage advice, unless you’re someone who thinks Modern Family should have won Outstanding Comedy Series for a sixth-straight year. Then don’t embrace yourself.
