We’re just days away from the season two premiere of Gotham, and from the looks of things, the series is taking a darker turn for its new episodes. Not too long ago, Ben McKenzie promised fans that a better show is coming. With the decision to phase out Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney storyline to focus more on Arkham and the villains it bred, the validity behind McKenzie’s statement may hold weight.
We’ve seen a number of trailers over the past few months teasing what Fox is calling “the rise of the villains.” Continuing in that vein is the above featurette, which further explores the evil characters set to appear in the new season. What we have here — according to McKenzie, who appears in the video — are the inclusion of comic-book baddies like Firefly, Mr. Freeze, Dr. Strange, and Tigress. As well, genre fave James Frain has joined the series as the seemingly sinister Theo Galavan and the actor seems to excel best when he takes on the juicy bad guy roles (sorry, Paul Raines).
With further footage that shows Cameron Monaghan’s character taking shape as the Joker (we can agree on this now, right?), as well as Cory Michael Smith’s “full-bore psychotic” turn as Edward Nygma/Riddler, it looks like this new season might just put Fox back on the comic-book series map when it premieres its new season on Monday, September 21.
