Game of Thrones spoilers abound, and these days most of them are coming from the actors themselves. In the past, producers of the show have been very explicit with their stars about loose lips sinking ships, but that hasn’t stopped Sophie Turner from accidentally dropping a spoiler bomb on the Oscars red carpet, and now new addition Ian McShane is revealing stuff, too. Guys! Stop it! Okay, don’t stop it. We love it. Spoil it all!
“My character is an ex-warrior who has become a peacenik,” McShane told BBC Breakfast. “So, I have this group of peaceful… sort of a cult, a peaceful tribe. I bring back a much loved character who everyone thinks is dead.”
Readers of the books will recognize McShane’s character as Septon Meribald, who wanders the Riverlands offering help and prayers to the war-ravaged peasants in the area. And hidden George R.R. Martin style in the background of his story: The Hound Sandor Clegane, who is staying at Meribald’s sanctuary and is referred to only as the Gravedigger.
The Hound’s return from assumed death and affiliation with the faith has many people anticipating an eventual Trial by Combat between Sandor Clegane and his brother Gregor The Mountain. It makes sense — Cersei was already desperately seeking a champion when she was locked up in the Sept of Baelor and now has Ser Robert Strong (also known as the reanimated corpse of Ser Gregor Clegane) on her team.
As internet fans are known to say on the regular: Cleganebowl confirmed! Get hype!
