'Inspector Spacetime' Might Become A Web Series

One of the best running gags on “Community” is Abed’s fanatical obsession with a “Doctor Who”-inspired British sci-fi series titled “Inspector Spacetime.” The word from a recent “Doctor Who” convention is that the show within a show may now be turned into a real life web series. According to io9, however, the series won’t feature Donald Glover and Danny Pudi. Instead, it will star (and be produced by) Travis Richey, the actor who plays the titular character in the short segments we’ve seen on “Community.”

Richey himself wrote to io9 to clarify a few things about the series:

Dan Harmon, “Community,” NBC and Sony have nothing to do with this web series. I pitched it to them after my first episode of “Community,” but never heard back from them one way or another. So I’m going to do it myself, with the help of fans. I’m launching a Kickstarter campaign in a matter of hours for an equipment budget, and the complete story can be read there.

I like this kid’s moxie. And by “moxie,” I of course mean “complete disregard for the basic tenets of American copyright law.” “Hey, you know that thing you guys generously cast me in that you created and own all the rights to? How would you feel about me taking the ball, running with it, and using the name in a series of webisodes without paying you for it or anything?” [crickets] “I’LL TAKE THAT AS A YES!”

I hope this kid’s Kickstarter page raises $1 billion and then Dan Harmon sues him and takes all his money and uses it to make a “Community” movie on the scale of Avatar, complete with Alison Brie painted blue from head-to-toe.
