Johnny Lewis Update: May Have Been On Drugs, May Have Also Killed A Cat. Plus, Kurt Sutter Weighs In

Earlier today Dustin brought you the news that Johnny Lewis, Half Sack from Sons of Anarchy and Chili from The O.C. had passed away under very odd and sad sounding circumstances. Some details have trickled out throughout the day, and seeing as no single aspect of the story was particularly good to start with, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the shading on the story is a huge bummer all around, too.

First of all, here is what we now know and/or suspect happened, as filled in by witnesses and the people involved. Lewis allegedly killed 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who may have been renting him a room, while under the influence of drugs, which police suspect to be the designer hallucinogen “smiles.” From The LA Times:

Lewis allegedly climbed a wall and fought with a house painter at a neighboring residence before going back to Davis’ home, police said. He then scaled the wall again to fight with the painter and the owner of the second house, Los Angeles police Sgt. Frank Preciado said.

The owner of the home said reports that Lewis showed “superhuman strength” were accurate. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said Lewis was hardly detered by the blows he took, that it was like “hitting him with a fly swatter.”

The neighbor, his wife and the painter ran into the house after managing to shake Lewis. It took all three barricaded against the door to keep him out, said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified.

When officers arrived, they found Lewis’ body in the driveway about six feet from the wall. They later found Davis’ body at the home. Investigators said they believe Davis died from blunt force trauma and that Lewis was the sole suspect.

Furthermore, Lewis had only been out of jail six days at the time of his death, although there is no report of what the charges were at this time. He was also recently in rehab, according to a TMZ source. Also, there’s this:

What’s more … we’re told a dead cat was found in the house where Lewis lived with the landlady — and the home was ransacked. Police are investigating, but Lewis is also suspected of killing the cat.

Ugh. Finally, Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter took to Twitter to discuss the troubled actor. (Warning: Major SOA spoiler below)

not sure if folks know this yet, but johnny lewis (halfsack) died last night. the sad irony of it happening two days after opie’s death is not lost on me. it was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way. i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not. i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it’s day or mourning, but it’s also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying.

As I said above, nothing about this story is good. It’s all sad from the beginning to end. If true, a very troubled young man didn’t get the help he obviously needed, and he, an 81-year-old woman, and the woman’s cat are all dead because of it. I don’t really have a joke here. Instead, I’d just like to take this opportunity to tell you get help if you’re struggling, or to help someone else get the help they need. These are avoidable situations. Let’s all try our best to avoid them.
