Fox loves itself a crossover episode. Family Guy came to Springfield. The X-Files… also came to Springfield, as did The Critic, King of the Hill (briefly), and Futurama. But the cheap cartoon crossover, to quote Bart Simpson, extends to Seth MacFarlane’s “Night of the Hurricane” three-peat with Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, as well as live-action series. Last year, Dr. Lady Bones and FBI Special Agent Bones (I assume that’s their names) worked with Sleepy Hollow‘s Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills to solve a case, and next Tuesday, the New Girl gang is heading to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
The “crossover event of the year,” as Fox dubbed it (at least until Downward Dog becomes the vice president on Designated Survivor), begins on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, when Jake runs into Jess, who’s visiting the Big Apple so Schmidt can get honored by his high school. The shows collide after, according to co-showrunner Brett Baer, Jess is tasked with “retrieving soup from Schmidt’s favorite deli, which happens to be right where the [99th Precinct] is. So Jess is on her way to get this soup and she has a run-in with various members of the Brooklyn gang.” That’s when New Girl takes over. Judging by the trailer above, it’s the rare crossover that might work — both shows (which are in the middle of quietly solid seasons) have silly sensibilities; plus, Winston is a cop. I’m not sure Holt will put up with his classic mess-arounds with Cece, though.
