After months of speculation and confirmation, AMC finally previewed then released the first teaser for Preacher in October and November of last year. An adaptation of the phenomenal comic book series written by Garth Ennis, drawn by Steve Dillon, and published by the DC Comics imprint Vertigo, the new show has been a long time coming. However, not a single drop of new information or media (including an official premiere date) has been released to the public since the teaser’s release… until now.
That’s because AMC just sent out three brand new, larger than life photos depicting the three main characters of Preacher. Feast your eyes on the Rev. Jess Custer (Dominic Cooper), the unmistakably Irish Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and the mysterious Tulip (Ruth Negga). All three are here to band together to try to save the world. That, or at least smoke a few good ones while the apocalypse finally decides to show up as scheduled.
Preacher will mostly follow the travails of Custer, a West Texas preacher “who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power.” As the entity and Custer gradually morph into one another, the being’s immense power grants Custer a rather unique gift — one that most wearers of the cloth would probably kill for.
Custer’s quest finds two recruits, one of whom is an “Irish vagabond” of a vampire named Cassidy whose penchant for alcohol is matched only by his lust for blood and his annoying habit of never going outside during daylight hours.
The second is Tulip, Custer’s “badass ex-girlfriend” who helps her former lover-turned-reverend fight his way through a much larger cast of characters that hails from the furthest heights of Heaven, the deepest recesses of Hell, and everywhere in between.
The comic book’s realization as a television show became a reality thanks mostly to executive producers (and pilot co-writers and co-directors) Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the same minds behind the likes of This Is the End, Pineapple Express and Superbad. Yes, that probably sounds like a bad mix for an adaptation of a violent, religious-themed series of comics that — aside from a few minor jokes — weren’t all that funny. Considering the images above and the teaser released in November, however, it’s safe to say that Preacher has come to deliver one helluva sermon.
Preacher debuts some time in mid-2016 on AMC.
