The final ratings information for the 2016 Golden Globes are in, and they aren’t so good. They’re not terrible, of course, as millions of people tuned in to watch host Ricky Gervais try to insult every single person in the room. But they still weren’t that good, either.
According to Deadline, the 73rd instance of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s awards gala garnered a 5.5 rating with an audience of 18.5 million. Compared to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s final stint as co-hosts in 2015, Gervais’ triumphant return to the stage was down four percent in viewership and five percent in the demo. To the British comedian’s credit, however, this year’s numbers were up 10 percent from 2012 — the last time he’d hosted before Fey and Poehler took over.
So, who beat NBC’s faltering Golden Globes telecast this time? Fox, of course, because the final hour of the Green Bay Packers/Washington Redskins wild card playoff game butted heads with the ceremony’s first. The game drew a 10.7/31 rating with an audience of 33.05 million. Sure, everyone loves good bad awkward Ben Affleck and Mel Gibson jokes, but it’s difficult to compete with the pigskin.
Despite these numbers, it seems the HFPA wants Gervais to host the 2017 Golden Globes. At least that’s what the comedian told Deadline at one of the event’s many after parties:
Deadline caught up with Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais at the Weinstein-Netflix party and he told us that he’s been asked back to host the Golden Globes. No final decision has been made yet.
Typically, such awards hosting gigs come with options of two or three years on their contracts.
Of course, Gervais was asked this question at a party after the famously alcohol-laden ceremony, so there’s no way to tell whether or not he was accurate. But if the HFPA does want Gervais back, nothing official will come of the post-ceremony offer, as noted by Deadline.
Entertainment Weekly has already created a poll asking readers who should host in 2017. It features plenty of commendable pairs (Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence) and individuals (Aziz Ansari), though it doesn’t mention previous co-hosts Fey and Poehler. Fans definitely wouldn’t mind their return to the stage.
Let’s be honest, though. We all want the same two people on that stage come 2017, getting drunk and handing out glistening, golden awards — Lady Gaga and Leonardo DiCaprio. Make this happen, HFPA.
