It happens in all shows on broadcast television that exist for more than a few seasons; there is a need to “shake things up” every once in a while, which is exactly what is happening with The Voice. The addition of Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys to the judges panel has raised some eyebrows since it was initially announced, taking the place of Pharell Williams and Christina Aguilera. Interestingly enough, this creates an equal panel of two men and two women for once, although this is going to be Miley Cyrus on broadcast television, sometimes even live!
Perhaps that is what NBC is going for by bringing in Miley Cyrus. While nobody will doubt Alicia Keys or her credibility, many will be curious just to see what kind of crazy stuff Miley does, or what she’s wearing. The new promo video even has her talking about potential cat fights (note: she says there probably won’t be any) and the strange expectations of what she and Alicia will do as judges.
“As much as the world loves to make this girl cat fight scenario, that’s actually Blake and Adam.”
The video continues by talking up the two new judges, their respective accomplishments and even has the guys singing their praises, all of that interspersed with footage of them all interacting with each other. Is this going to be awkward? It’s going to be awkward. Of course, it wouldn’t be a trailer for a season of The Voice without Miley doing something racy, right? So of course there is a glimpse of her tearing off a jacket because, well, Miley.
Season 11 of The Voice starts up on September 19th on NBC and may or may not be a postmodern experiment on broadcast television.
