Emmy-winning Univision anchor Rodner Figueroa has been fired over his on-air comments about Michelle Obama.
Figueroa made the remarks on El Gordo y la Flaca, an entertainment news program on the network, during a conversation about Paolo Ballesteros and his make-up transformations into Dakota Johnson, Cate Blanchett, Cher, and Michelle Obama. He joked, “Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of Planet of the Apes.” Univision did not find it particularly funny, however, and Figueroa was terminated from the network:
“Yesterday during our entertainment program ‘El Gordo y La Flaca’ Rodner Figueroa made comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision’s values or views,” Univision said in a statement. “As a result, Mr. Figueroa was immediately terminated.”
Figueroa has not yet commented publicly on the firing, and his Twitter account has been silent since late Wednesday night.
