There are a few good things to come out of Donald Trump’s involvement in the deal to keep Carrier workers at their jobs in Indiana. The biggest is that the deal saves a bunch of jobs from moving to Mexico and some 800 people can rest easier this holiday. It also has Carrier investing more money into their factory.
The rest, as Trevor Noah points out, is not very good. Headlines saying Trump saved jobs aren’t telling the full story, there’s a lot of working parts that he really didn’t have a hand in, and the deal made isn’t a long term solution outside of this deal. As Bernie Sanders says, it sets a “dangerous precedent” for other companies in the future and makes Trump look great while actually just paying a ransom. The PR victory that Trevor Noah likens to a con man’s trick during three-card monte.
And no matter how Trump reacts to his critics, how people react to the deal, and how Carrier treats its workers once the spotlight is gone, we’re still going to be left with a lot of people losing their jobs. Trump made a lot of promises during his campaign and even if you hate him, you want to hope that he keeps those promises. Some of that won’t matter thanks to progress — even Carrier is using these tax breaks and benefits towards automating their Indiana factories — but you hope that President Trump or anybody else can keep their promises on the jobs they can work to save.
From what most reports have pointed out, the Carrier method is not that cure-all.
