There’s nothing on TV tonight, folks. Nothing. Not unless you want to watch the season finale of “Toddlers and Tiaras,” and if that is indeed the case, I think you’re reading the wrong blog. It is a good time to watch movies, however. And thanks to the wonders of the Internet, you don’t even have to leave your house. Here’s a small selection of recent movies on the various services that might be worth your while. Feel free to offer your own recommendations.
Netflix — By yourself: Limitless: Not great, but an above average thriller with Bradley Cooper and a super drug that makes you super intelligent. The ending is kind of anti-climactic, but it’s totally watchable. With a Date: Morning Glory: Really cute, totally underrated romantic comedy that features a shot of Rachel McAdams’ ass that spun the Internet on its head last year. If you’re feeling smart: Waiting for Superman: An informative documentary on the state of public education and charter schools; it’s very good, but be warned: It’s not very kind to teacher’s unions.
YouTube — The movie selection on YouTube is not very extensive, but it cost the same to rent as on iTunes and you don’t have to wait for the movies to download. By Yourself: Warrior: One of my favorite flicks of the year; if you’re not into UFC, don’t let that dissuade you. It’s two Rocky movies for the price of one and features three outstanding performances. With a Date: Friends with Benefits: Oh, I know: You probably hate Justin Timberlake, but Mila Kunis is half naked. A lot. And while it hews close to most rom-com conventions, it’s fast-paced, amusing, and much much better than No Strings Attached. If you’re feeling smart: Senna: The best documentary of 2011. It’s about an F1 Formula Race car driver, but again, don’t let that dissuade you. It’s an amazing flick, and the ending will crush you.
Amazon Instant — If you’re by yourself or with a date: The Fright Night remake was one of the biggest surprises of the year; few people saw it, but most who did loved it. It’s extra good if you’re a fan of David Tennant. Moneyball: It just became available for rental at the $3.99 price and it’s worth every second. It’s the best sports movie in years and no, it doesn’t matter that the Oakland As never won the Series.. If you’re feeling smart: Exit Through the Gift Shop: Maybe the best documentary of 2010, this one is a mindf*ck. Watch it. Be wowed. Then spend all night trying to figure out the real story.
