This story begins with something that is no joke: Kesha entered rehab at the start of January to cope with an undisclosed eating disorder. It’s certainly not the reason I would’ve put money on regarding a Kesha rehab stint, but it is good that she’s seeking help for her troubles. From Huffington Post:
“I’m a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I’ve found it hard to practice,” she said. The 26-year-old vegetarian pop star said she wants to “learn to love myself again, exactly as I am.” No other details were provided.
It’s a positive step in the right direction and a warning about the pitfalls that can come with fame. At least that’s what you would think before hearing from Kesha’s mother on the subject. She blames Kesha’s advisers and handlers for her daughter’s troubles. From Huffington Post:
“Dr. Luke had been telling her how she had to get in shape and lose weight and all this stuff. She was exercising and dieting and ultimately doing everything she could, but not getting thin fast enough,” Sebert told People magazine. “And that’s when she first became bulimic.”
According to the singer’s mother, Dr. Luke compared the the pop star to a “refrigerator” at one of her video shoots and asked if she could please get her weight under control. “After she went on a 14-day juice cleanse, he said, ‘Thank God you finally got rid of the weight! We’ve all been talking about it!’ So she felt like she couldn’t trust anyone,” Sebert added.
And thus a story of positivity becomes a story of scandal and controversy. Dr. Luke and the rest of Ke$ha’ advisory team have denied these claims, but that didn’t stop her mother from making the celebrity media rounds to support her point of view and advocate for her daughter. My only problem is that this story is too dark at the moment. It needs something to help it and push it into more familiar territory.
Pebe Sebert, is entering the same Chicago-area rehab center as her daughter, Sebert confirms to People. “I’m checking myself into Timberline Knolls today for post-traumatic stress disorder, at Kesha’s urging,” the 57-year-old said in a statement to the magazine. (via)
There we go. We’ve entered Lohan territory. The kind of realm where your family loves you so much, they do crazy things in your name and end up in the spotlight themselves.
I think the only moral of this story is to not be famous. It’s the only way to ensure that your family, friends and handlers don’t push you into a very public rehab stint or make a spectacle of themselves across the media. Then again if you’re drinking your own piss and promoting jewelery made from human teeth, spectacle is your thing and this is par for the course.
The main point here is that Ke$ha is weird. And while I hope she gets better in regards to her very serious disorder, I hope to never hear about her again.
