The Comic You Should Be Reading This Week: 'Planetoid' #3

At first I thought Ken Garing was up to a fairly typical science fantasy story with Planetoid. After all, hero crash-lands, hero finds sidekicks, hero beats up robots, pretty standard if well-written stuff.

Issue #3 is where it changes, though.

Silas, our hero, is facing the problem of gathering resources and building a community. It turns out that he’s not just a strong arm, but a competent leader.

Most of the issue is concerned with how Silas doesn’t create just an army, but rather a community on the Slab. It’s an interesting narrative direction not least because it fleshes him out as more than just a soldier in a crappy situation, but a genuine leader, and somebody who cares about these people and the terrible life they live.

Silas wants off this rock, but he won’t do it without bringing his people with him.

In short, it’s a great book and one I’m rapidly warming to.

How about you? I know it was a light week for a lot of you, but tell us your favorite this week in the comments, and we’ll talk some comics.
