‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Is Vying For An Oscar, Shiny And Gold

Both Vince and Mike loved Mad Max: Fury Road, and Tom Hardy apologized to director George Miller for ever doubting him, but I’ll admit I assumed it was too much of a crowd-pleaser and unabashed action flick for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider it for any Oscars. I mean, sure, Mad Max: Fury Road was voted the best film of the last fiscal year by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), but will the Academy be willing to admit an action film (or a performance within an action film) is worth accolades?

Warner Bros. is hoping so. They’re pushing for Oscar consideration for Best Picture, as well as Best Actor nods for Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, as found by film critic Mike McGranahan:

Bless your optimistic little hearts, Warner, but we all know Eddie Redmayne is going to sweep all those categories this year. Even Best Picture. He has transcended flesh and become the medium. He had to realign his spine and everything. So brave.
