On February 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops III will roll out its first new set of maps, and a new episode in its Zombies side game arrives on the PS4. It’s a pretty good deal for $15… but if you’re on a PS3 or an Xbox 360, you’re officially out of luck.
The press release announcing the DLC couldn’t get more explicit; if you scroll down to the bottom, it not only says this particular DLC won’t be coming to last-gen systems, but that nothing announced as part of the game’s season pass will be available, either. So, if you were hoping to try out those new maps, better start saving for a new console.
Activision sent a clear signal when it was announced last-gen consoles couldn’t handle the game’s single-player campaign that the franchise wasn’t going to support them going forward, but this takes it to a whole new level. The multiplayer game is the centerpiece of Call of Duty, and regular map updates are the lifeblood of any multiplayer game over the long haul. It’s especially odd as Activision has noted in the past they have an enormous, and thriving, player base on consoles with Black Ops II.
Either way, it appears that if you’re a Call of Duty fan, the writing is on the wall. The next entry in the franchise hasn’t been announced yet, but from these actions, one thing’s for sure; you won’t be seeing it on last-gen consoles.
