The Abysmal ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Movie Gets The Honest Trailer Treatment

“How much acid did these filmmakers take? All of it. All of the acid.” That’s the conclusion Screen Junkies came up with regarding 1993’s Super Mario Bros. in the newest Honest Trailer, and we’re inclined to agree. It was the first feature film to be based on the plot of a video game (as opposed to movies like The Last Starfighter, which incorporated fictitious games into a larger storyline), and we’re still a little surprised this wasn’t also the last film adapted from a video game.

Anyway, if you ever want to feel better about your own job, just take a stroll through the IMDb trivia page for Super Mario Bros., wherein we learn John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins were constantly getting drunk because they hated the movie so much, and they were reportedly just ignoring the daily rewrites of the script. Also, Hoskins later declared this movie both his worst job and his biggest disappointment. Something about trying to do a real-life version of Mario and Luigi just seems so depressing…
