Should Anne Hathaway reprise her Catwoman role in the current DC universe?

Anne Hathaway wasn't the first person to play DC Comics Catwoman and she won't be the last. But is there a future for her version of the classic character in the current Warner Bros. DC film universe?

Hathaway recently spoke to Variety while promoting her latest film, Colossal. Considering Warner Bros' DC Comics films are getting a lot of attention right now, and she played Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, they asked her if she'd be opposed to doing a Catwoman movie. She replied, “Of course not.”

That's not to say it's going to become a reality. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also recently asked about continuing his DKR role and said in part the third film was “the perfect ending to that story.”

“I loved that character so much and I had such a blast playing it,” Hathaway told Variety but added the obvious caveat, “I'm not sure how it would work because I think the Chris Nolan chapter of the Batman story has been wrapped up and I am part of that so I don't know. But I love the DC universe and it would be fun to take a trip back.”

While many would find it off-putting to mash Nolan's universe into the current Snyder-verse, not all of the current DC film adaptations are going to take place in the same continuity. “As of right now we have no connective tissue to those worlds,” Greg Berlanti admitted this week of his Booster Gold film.

That said, anything (as always) is possible. Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie is working on a Harley Quinn film that would also include other DC female characters like Batgirl or other members of the Birds of Prey and I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to include Catwoman in there. Hathaway could always reprise the role without actually playing the same character from DKR but I think it would be great to give someone else a shot.

Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt, Maggie Baird, Camren Bicondova, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Halle Berry have all played Catwoman in live-action and Hathaway told Variety you can't possibly claim ownership of such a role.

“I think that sort of goes with the territory when you accept it, you receive it from the last Catwoman,” she said. “I was shown such generosity from Halle and from Michelle and so, you know, I would do that the next time as well.”

Who would you like to see play Catwoman?
