Kirk and Spock survive a close call in new ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ clip

For those of you who aren’t quite sold on J.J. Abrams directing “Star Wars: Episode VII,” a brand new, action-packed clip from his upcoming “Star Trek Into Darkness” may help you make up your mind.

In the video above, a small vessel carrying Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) tries to evade an attack from an enemy ship (friends of Benedict Cumberbatch’s John Harrison character?). Kirk spies a possible — and possibly fatal — escape route. Spock finds the choice to be illogical. Spoiler alert: They survive.

It looks more like a clip from that other galaxy than anything seen in previous “Star Trek” films and series (with the possible exception of Abrams’ 2009 original). It even sounds more like “Star Wars,” with its booming orchestral score, and Kirk’s swaggery, Han Solo-esque boasts. It’s not very hard to imagine the exact same scene being played out in the summer of 2015 with an aging Han and Chewie pulling some risky maneuvers in order to escape from the clutches of a malicious enemy.

“Darkness” also stars Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood and Alive Eve .

“Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in the U.S. May 17.
