Bill Murray does his thing with Melissa McCarthy in ‘St. Vincent’ trailer

Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy form a sort of comedy dream team in the first trailer for the upcoming “St. Vincent.”

McCarthy plays a single mother, whose pre-teen son (Jaeden Lieberher) forms an unlikely friendship with the broke, crotchety vet who lives next door (played by Murray, of course). Together, they experience the finer things in life — bars, race tracks, strip clubs, etc. — and learn something about themselves (awwwww…).

It's a familiar formula, and it's hard not to compare it to “Rushmore,” but the trailer features plenty of genuine laughs and some heart. “St. Vincent marks the directorial debut of writer-producer Theodore Melfi.

Murray looks to be in top form and, given the film's release date, will likely be trying to court some Oscar attention again. Meanwhile, McCarthy appears to be playing much more of a straight woman role than usual, and newcomer Lieberher seems like he has no trouble keeping up with his co-stars, which also include Chris O'Dowd, Scott Adsit and Naomi Watts.

“St. Vincent” will be released on October 24, 2014.
